But there is, as she reflects, a lack of closure in her life, which feels right because of her own amorphous sense of self. She is a dispossessed woman who has no particular identity or personality except as she “wanders the halls.” What she longs for is the story of the musician with whom she is involved, yet when she is finally reunited with him it is in the context of a fantasy, which, she notes, is “the thing that lets me believe in who I’m not.”
The stories in this collection are her individual private stories, but all speak to a pervasive sense of unsettlement and abandonment, of a fundamental sense of disconnection. Two, for example, are about the feeling of leaving home. “Ditch,” the first story, is about a mother who feels guilty about deserting her home and therefore blames herself for her son’s incarceration in prison. “Keeping the Company” is about a young woman who has decided to leave her home life in a place she does not care for but who cannot decide where to go and so keeps returning home.
The fourth story, “Sailing Toward the Islands,” is set in the Caribbean and it’s about a young woman who is working on a luxury cruise ship. It ends with her being violently awakened from a nightmarish dream when she hears a scream.
